Thoughts on Ford’s Mondeo EcoBoost
The new EcoBoost engine in the Ford Mondeo turns the sedan into a comfortable mile eater.
Ford Eco Boost Forum - Ford’s Mondeo has been around in its Mk IV guise for three years, but has only benefited from the new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine since the start of this year.
The Mondeo isn’t sold in the United States, and Europeans largely ignore it, other than fleet managers and rental companies. This is a pity, as it has a solid ride/handling setup. But make no mistake, the engine is the real star here.
From behind the wheel, you don’t feel at all like you are driving a turbo, thanks to a combination of low-inertia turbocharging and twin-independent variable cam timing.
The most impressive statistic is the fact that its maximum torque of 221 lb-ft is delivered across a broad rpm range, between 1,750 and 4,500. Talk about linear power delivery.
Maybe because of this characteristic, the Mondeo is actually faster than it feels: 0 to 62 mph comes up in 7.9 seconds, while top speed is an impressive 144 mph. However, the car is not an especially invigorating drive: The Mondeo is all about covering miles quickly and comfortably rather than getting out with your nerve endings tingling. This is despite the fact that it has a full 25 percent more power than the outgoing 2.3-liter Mondeo engine.
