I am in the market for a new Flex, and I am not sure if I should go for the EB engine or not. The last turbo I had was 20 years ago, and turbo lag and overheating were both problems. I understand that EB has addressed the lag problem with the twin turbos, but what about the heat? Does an EB engine run hotter than a regular engine? Will it last as long?

What is the down side? Is there any negatives to eco boost?

That's a good question, Steve. I'm wondering why they aren't putting it in the ol' standby Crown Victoria (or a similar police/commercial fleet application.)
If you aren't already, you can reduce you fuel consumption today, without buying a new car, by 15-50% (depending on how you currently drive) just by EcoDriving. Here are some tips I've written to get you started, but there is much more out there on the web if you get interested!

"..what about the heat?.."
The DFI engine's "base"/static compression ratio has been lowered from the DFI "standard" of 12:1 in order to have more heat of combustion arrive at the turbine. The only time the compression ratio reaches an effective 15:1 is with full boost, RARELY. If you always drive like a scalded cat runs then you will find the EcoBoost FE most satisfactory.
On the other hand if you drive with reason, like the clear majority of us, the EcoBoost FE will be nothing less than HORRID.
